Bipolar Warning Signs to Look For
Some family members or close friends may be able to help the person they care for recognize bipolar warning signs and take action to prevent full bipolar relapse. Not all people with bipolar disorder get these warning signs, but for those who do, involving a family member or close friend in helping to recognize and or respond to these bipolar signs can be very helpful. Warning signs of mania or hypomania are commonly easier to pick up than signs of bipolar depression.
What can the person with early warning signs of mania or hypomania do to prevent mania, hypomania and negative consequences?
• Seek early medical treatment and take prescribed medication to help them rest or sleep. • Reduce stimulation (e.g. Prioritize and do fewer tasks, avoid stimulating substances). • Rest • Take precautions to prevent risky behavior (e.g. Temporarily give their credit cards to you or another carer/ caregiver for safekeeping to prevent reckless spending).
This is significant part of this particular subject matter. It can be very difficult for a person to go against their bipolar mood and use helpful illness management strategies. Nevertheless, ignoring bipolar warning signs, for example doing stimulating things and lots of activities when becoming manic or hypomanic can make symptoms worse. In fact people with bipolar report that the best chance they’ve of preventing bipolar relapse is if they catch warning signs early before their symptoms are too severe. Family members and close friends can sometimes encourage helpful illness management strategies and create a calm, quiet environment to reduce stimulation when the person is becoming hypomanic or manic.
What can the person with warning signs of bipolar depression do to try to prevent their symptoms from getting worse?

• Consult their doctor. • Be with supportive people. • Schedule small activities (e.g activities that may give them pleasure or a sense of achievement or some physical exercise). • Get organized and try to maintain a routine. • Not sleep during the day and get up at the same time each morning. • Not make important decisions about their life until they feel better. • Talk about their negative thoughts with someone they trust. • Get help if they feel suicidal.
What doesn’t help with warning signs of depression is ignoring these signs and being inactive or self-medicating with alcohol or drugs. You may be able to help by inviting the person to do manageable activities together and talking things through with them.
Taking action early to prevent full bipolar episodes can make a difference. Close family and friends can often be the first to notice mood changes. That being said, misinterpreting mood fluctuations and behavior that are common to us all as part of bipolar disorder can be hurtful and frustrating. Also, constantly watching and questioning the person for signs of illness can affect your relationship and prevent them from enjoying times when they’re well.

Here are a few websites that will give you information on bipolar Bipolar Disorder SYMPTOMS Bipolar disorder (also known as “manic depression”) is often not recognized by the patient, relatives, friends, or even physicians. An early sign of manic-depressive illness may be hypomania — a state in which the person shows a high level of energy, excessive moodiness or irritability, and impulsive or reckless behavior. Hypomania may feel good to the person who experiences it. Thus, even when family and friends learn to recognize the mood swings, the individual often will deny that anything is wrong. In its early stages, bipolar disorder may masquerade as a problem other than mental illness. For example, it may first appear as alcohol or drug abuse, or poor school or work performance. If left untreated, bipolar disorder tends to worsen, and the person experiences episodes of full-fledged manic episodes and depressive episodes. One of the usual differential diagnoses for bipolar disorder is that the symptoms (listed below) aren’t better accounted for by Schizoaffective Disorder and is not superimposed on Schizophrenia, Schizophreniform Disorder, Delusional Disorder, or Psychotic Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. And as with nearly all mental disorder diagnoses, the symptoms of manic depression must cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Symptoms also can not be the result of substance use or abuse (e.g., alcohol, drugs, medications) or caused by a general medical condition
Bipolar II Symptoms in Men | eHow.com. Bipolar II Symptoms in Men. Bipolar II is a mood disorder that causes rapid mood swings. It differs from Bipolar I in that the upswing never reaches the full manic
Everyone has moods like those of Bipolar Disorder……. Because everyone has mood swings, momentary loss of judgment, likes to go shopping, likes sex, feels down sometimes, gets angry now and then and is hyper on occasion. The difference is that all of these symptoms in Bipolar are so intense that they interfere with your ability to function. Think of a pole (biPOLEr) with zero at the center (0 being normal) and ten at one end (manic) and -10 at the other (deep depression). Most people have swings but stay within three to -3. I’ve fairly severe Bipolar one but since my psychosis is mild I go from -9 to 9…. Also depression that comes and goes is not bipolar but just recurring depression, you have to have mania for it to be Bipolar….. You have to go to both ends of the pole. Rapidly changing emotions or becoming angry or sad easily is not all there is to Bipolar. That’s just having emotions. People with Bipolar Disorder don’t just change emotions quickly, they go through periods of depression followed by periods of mania or elevated mood. Mood affects everything about you…. Your energy level, self esteem, sleep patterns, appetite, sexuality, emotional response, judgment, etc….. Not just your emotions. And while rapid cycling is possible, it’s rare. The average person with Bipolar only cycles 2 or 3 times a year and the moods last for weeks or months. It’s considered rapid cycling if they cycle four or more times in a year. While everyone with Bipolar has a different set of symptoms and a different severity of symptoms, this is what Bipolar is like for me: Depression – too tired to get out of bed, shower, even to brush my teeth. Cry all the time, sleep sixteen hours a day. Feelings of self loathing and guilt that drive me to think of suicide but I'm to tired to even think about how to go about killing myself. It makes you feel small and worthless and completely insignificant. It makes you think about how big the world is and how meaningless you’re in it….. And it refuses to let you have any good thoughts or see any good things…. When you look in the mirror all you see is pain, you don't even see yourself, you don't taste your favorite foods anymore, see that flowers are blooming, whether or not the sun is out, you become so inward that you hardly even notice your surroundings….. You don't even feel love for people anymore…. Positive thoughts are just not possible…… It’s a deep dark hole with no way out and no light for hope…. And most of all it makes you feel sooooo alone. And even if there were someone who cared about you they would be better off if you killed yourself……. Because all you’ll ever be is a burden……. This can last from a couple of weeks to a couple of years. Mania – Way too happy! PARTY GIRL! Love drink and drugs. Talk really fast and pressured because my thoughts are going faster than my mouth can keep up with. Hypersexual – like I sleep with strangers and guys I just met on the internet or I masturbate ten times a day. I once became bisexual because there were twice as many people to sleep with. Down load porn and spend tons of money on sex toys. Spending sprees….. I once spent my mortgage money on african violets, yep, 1500 dollars on African violets (then I got depressed and let them all die). Quit my job because I wanted my vacation pay for lottery tickets and I was so convinced I would win that I started shopping and writing bad checks because I'd be rich as soon as the numbers were drawn. Decided that I could replace the furnace in my home by myself… I mean how hard can it be….. Only sleep two or maybe three hours a night for months on end and never feel tired. In the end I was unemployed, 30,000 in debt, and had almost lost my home, which needed a new furnace because I had removed the old one.. Or parts of it anyway. This can last for months. I also have mixed states when I’m depressed and manic at the same time which are truly the worst… By body and mind are depressed but there is this undercurrent of energy running all the time….. I'm highly emotional but the emotions tend to be negative (guilt and anger) I’ve intrusive thoughts and urges to mutilate myself (like wanting to stick my hands in the garbage disposal or cooking them on the BBQ), and I also have psychotic episodes where I hallucinate. This is when I’m most suseptible to suicide because I’m depressed, wanting to hurt myself, and I’ve the mental energy to plan and carry it out
