Psychology question about DSM Axis? Freddie is a twenty-nine year old man who was diagnosed with major depressive disorder at age 20. He has periods of time when he’s unable to leave the house because of a profound sadness that he can’t shake. During these episodes, Freddie loses weight, sleeps less than usual, feels hopeless and worthless, and has thoughts about suicide. He had one serious suicide attempt at age twenty-five and was hospitalized for one month. He has quit several jobs after getting negative feedback from supervisors, and meets his bills with help from his parents. Those periods of sadness usually last about two months, and then he starts to feel somewhat better. He can get himself to work and spends some times with old friends. Additionally, even between episodes, he feels helpless and hopeless, and reports that he has not felt happy or satisfied with his life for several years. The best diagnosis on Axis I for Freddie is?

Bipolar disorder and finances…? Bipolar disorder runs in my family, and so far everyone who has it has MAJOR financial problems (constant overdrafts, forgetting to set aside money for bills, you name it financially – if it's a bad plan they've done it) My little brother is joining the ranks now, I want to help him because he's MASSIVELY overdrawn and just starting his life (he's eightteen – just got out on his own) but I'm not sure what to advise him to do at this point… Anyone who has ever been there?

Spending too much money is very common with Bipolar Disorder. I’m diagnosed with Major Depression and Dysthymic Disorder, but sometimes I’ve a tendency to overspend. Sometimes I seem almost Bipolar although I haven’t been formally diagnosed (but my brother was). All I can say is you have to figure out what your montly expenses are and keep some kind of budget. I used to get paid once a month. I wouild pay all of my bills as soon as I got paid, put some money in savings, and then take out cash and put a certain amount of money in 4 envelopes for my weekly spending money. That worked out pretty good at the time. If I used all the money in the envelope before the week was over I knew I was spending too much. It taught me to pay attention.
