“take-as-needed” depression meds? I would love to find a depression medication that I could use just to curb really bad episodes… I really want to avoid continual use. I've heard clonazepam is good for this, but I'm having a hard time finding other sources…

Unfortunately, there isn't any depression medications that you can take “as-needed” that I know of at least. It takes a while for the drug to circulate in your blood stream to be fully effective. Just because your doctor may prescribe a continual use medication doesn't mean you'll have to be on it forever. Some people go on antidepressants for as little as six months and can be weaned off without any relapse. Although it’sn't known what the actual mechanism is, antidepressants are thought to “re-awaken” serotonin receptors, so after this occurs, you may be able to go off the medication (at the advice of your doctor). But nevertheless, don’t, and I repeat don’t take antidepressants for a week or so and then go off of them alternatively. It’ll seriously mess up your system and you may end up having some goofy physical side effects. I understand your aversion to depression medications, but at least consider them as an option if you’re bad enough.
